Product Description:

Manual and CD. Mentor Training Manual for New Mentors is a curriculum developed by Reverend John Leonardson, founder of MentorCare Ministries and former executive director of Dallas-based Exodus Ministries, a residential aftercare facility for ex-offenders. The manual is designed to prepare Christian mentors to help inmates make a successful transition back into society by providing ex-offenders with a source of support, guidance and accountability. Drawing on Reverend Leonardson’s extensive experience in working with ex-offenders, the manual pro vides practical training and instruction for Christians who will be entering mentoring relationships with offenders,

either during or after their incarceration.

The first part of the manual contains an introduction to aftercare describing why Christians should care about inmates who are leaving prison, the harmful effects of prison on inmates, and the large number of potential barriers to success that inmates will encounter upon their release. It also describes the role of a mentor, the characteristics of a good mentor, and the difference between mentoring and discipling. The manual discusses the principle of restorative justice and its goal of healing the victim, the offender, and the community. Helpful information such as “Do’s & Don’ts” for mentors and mentees offer practical parameters for a healthy and productive mentoring relationship.

The forms section of the manual includes:

  •  a mentor application form, reference form

  •  a contract for the mentor and mentee to discuss and fill out

  •  other forms necessary for a successful mentoring program.

The last section of the manual provides helpful handouts that the mentor can provide to the mentee during the mentoring relationship, both to stimulate discussion and for the mentee to utilize on his own. These handouts include information to assist the ex-offender in setting goals and in recognizing the importance of finding a local church.

The CD contains all the forms included in the manual, a half-hour computer video, audio interviews, and additional information. A follow-up course for advanced mentoring training is currently under development.
